September Lunch /Breakfast Menu

Dear Parents/Guardians,
We know the beginning of the year can be challenging, especially when adding a new school or procedure to the mix. We initially sent out our Drop-Off/Pick-Up procedures in our Welcome Back email on August 10th. We wanted to get them out again just in case someone missed it. We have about 200 vehicles that pass through the lot in the morning and that definitely takes some time, even when done so efficiently. Please take a look at the procedures to help ensure that both Drop-Off and Pick-Up go smoothly. These procedures were created with Bourbonnais PD in an attempt to increase safety for our students and families and maximize efficiency.
A few reminders:
-There is only one lane of traffic when entering the parking lot until you get to the double lanes.
-There is no left turn out of the parking lot during drop-off and pick-up.
-When pulling curbside, please pull up as far as you can to unload or load your student.

We are excited to kick off our school year participating in an initiative called One School, One Book. As part of this initiative, all of our students and staff will be reading the same book at the same time! The purpose of this program is to build a sense of community around literacy, while utilizing a story to discuss important SEL (social-emotional learning) topics. The book we are reading is called Save Me a Seat by Sarah Weeks and Gita Varadarajan. The story centers around two main characters, Ravi and Joe, as they attempt to navigate their first week of school as 5th graders. Both characters have unique backgrounds and experiences, which shape the way they experience the events that unfold throughout the week.
As a district, we are always looking for ways to make connections between home and school. The OSOB initiative lends itself greatly to making this connection. We encourage families to talk about the story and inquire about what is being learned. If any of our parents/guardians would like to engage in this journey along with us, the reading schedule is below. Also, your students will be able to keep their book, so jotting down any thoughts, ideas, or notes in the book is welcomed.
Week 1: Aug 29th-Sept 1st (Pg. 3-45)
Week 2: Sept 5th-8th (Pg. 49-89)
Week 3: Sept 11th-15th (Pg. 93-133)
Week 4: Sept. 18th-22nd (Pg. 137-159)
Week 5: Sept. 25th-29th (Pg. 163-189)
Week 6: Oct. 2nd-6th (Pg. 190-216)
Our teachers have worked really hard to develop engaging and meaningful activities that they will facilitate within the classroom. We also have several fun surprises planned along the way! We appreciate your support and look forward to uniting our school community around this awesome book. Happy reading!!

Team Liberty had an outstanding first week with kids! It was great to see all of their smiling faces and hear about their summer break. They have already begun learning new things and engaging in powerful conversations within the classrooms. Today, our entire school engaged in a collaborative session about what it takes to become a better learner. We all watched the video during ROAR and discussed what it means to step outside of your comfort zone and push yourself to take risks, ask questions, and problem solve challenging content. What a powerful way to end the first week.
